A typical reflexology treatment

Treatments typically last 45 minutes and the first treatment will include a full health consultation looking at all areas of your health and lifestyle. This is so that I can obtain a full picture about you, your health and lifestyle and so that any ailment may be treated holistically (your whole body), but also calming the mind and boosting the spirit.

I will begin your treatment by asking you to remove your shoes and socks and settling you comfortably on to the warmed treatment couch in my treatment room. Next I will apply a cooling wipe to your feet. If this is your second or subsequent treatment we will discuss how you felt following your last treatment and establish what progress you have made and discuss any further issues so that we can continue to develop your treatment plan. During the treatment I will work all of the reflex areas on both of your feet using a technique known as thumb walking – your feet will not feel ticklish as I use a firm but gentle pressure. You may feel areas of localised discomfort which will be dispersed as the treatment progresses. These areas of tenderness will enable me to identify areas of imbalance within your body and by interpreting these sensations they will give me an important insight into the areas which need particular attention.

Many people feel relief and a deep relaxation after one session, but I may recommend a course of 4 to 6 treatments depending on your individual circumstances and your body’s needs. The closer these initial sessions are to each other the faster will be the resulting progress. It may be recommendable to then continue with a two weekly or monthly “maintenance sessions”.

Post treatment advice

After your treatment you may experience a number of effects which reflect that your body is responding well to the reflexology treatment and is eliminating toxins.

These effects may include:

• Headache
• Nasal and throat congestion including mucus discharge
• Increased urination and/or bowel movement
• Dry mouth and throat
• Increased energy levels
• Light-headedness

I will advise you to:

• Drink plenty of water
• Reduce stimulants such as caffeine, smoking and alcohol intake
• Eat light meals
• Take it nice and easy - no over-exertion
Any after effects will normally ease after 24 to 48 hours. The body is rebalancing itself, toxins, and water products are eliminated.

The importance of drinking water

The human body comprises 25% solid matter and 75% water. Brain tissue is said to consist of 85% water. Your body is constantly “burning off” or consuming water - in your spine for example, there are inter-vertebral discs that serve as shock absorbers, pressing out fluid with every movement. It is important that all of this water loss is replenished. I will encourage you to drink plenty of water after your reflexology treatment as it is important to help cleanse away the toxins released by your body as a result of the treatment.

The long term effects of dehydration contribute to many of today’s medical problems.
